Canon canoscan 8800F review by Stockholmviews.com , page 6

What's new in version Vuescan 8.4.48

  • Fixed problem with Canon 8800F transparency scans
  • Added CCD exposure time for Canon 8800F
  • Improved multi-exposure on most Canon flatbed scanners
  • Only do multi-exposure if scan will benefit
  • Don't display full path names in status bar
  • Fixed problem with B/W scans on HP G4010
  • Fixed maximum scan size on Agfa StudioScan

Crop positions above.

During the test of Vuescan and the Multi exposure feature of this excellent software
I will also explore if it is possible to improve scan quality by adding weight for stability!
I also fixed the film to the scanner glass with tape to make sure it don't move around due to
vibrations caused by the scanner during the scanning cycle.

6kg of sand
3 ea sandbags and a total of 7kg on top of the scanner, will this improve the sharpness?

USM applied to all scans, for the 8800F Amount=400 Radius=2,1 Threshold=0
FS4000 scan upsampled 4000px -> 4800px and USM Amount=200 Radius=0,3 Threshold=0

3 ea sandbags on the scanner
8800F Normal scan without sandbags / tape
and no multi-exposure
8800F with sandbags but not
multi-exposure

8800F with sandbags and multi-exposure on
And finally a crop from a scan performed with
the dedicated film scanner Canon FS4000

My conclution?

Well, the multi-exposure feature of Vuescan is in fact usefull most notisable are that the noise level in the shadows looks better when multi-exposure mode are activated, but the scan will also take more time to perfom (Vuescan actually scan the image twice in multi-exposure mode)

And the sandbags then?

I can't se any improvement when sandbags are used so no more sandbags for me :0)

Is there any other way to tweak this thing??
