Canon G10 review by Stockholmviews.com

Canon G10 vs G9 output size

We are all familiar with the so called pixel race that has been in focus for the last decade this has been explained and discussed before so I will just make a small
brush up for you :0)

The Canon powershot G10 has a 2.6 megapixel count advantage against the G9,
is that a big deal?

Lets take a look 4416x3312 vs 4000x3000 is a about 20% higher pixel count.
That sounds quite much or.....

G10 vs G9 output size compared

This image shows the
difference of the print size
that we can expect from
each of those cameras, does
20% look as much as it
sounds?

I would not have chosen the
G10 over the G9 just for the
extra 2.6 mp that is for sure.

I would rather have had the
same 12.1 that the G9 had
if I could trade it for a better
low light/ high iso performance.
That is for sure!

We are still waiting for the first DX or full frame fixed lens compact camera or one with a smaller sensor that can compete with those at iso values above 100.
I suppose it will happen in the future but until then....

Digital cameras and physical sensor sizes

Canon G10 has a 1/1.7"
sensor. In the overview
to the left you can see
how tiny it is compared
to DX sized sensor that
can be found on DSLR
cameras like the
Nikon D60!

Like the racing guys say
nothing beat cubic inches, about the same rules
apply for for image
sensors, nothing beat
square inches in regards
of sensor noise :0)

Time for another curve from DXO Labs
Dynamic range curve from DXO Labs on Canon G10 vs G9
The curve above tell us the truth, no pain no gain.
The higher pixel count/image surface area has given us "higher resolution" but
also lover dynamic range due to smaller light sensitive elements :0(
The winner in dynamics is according to DXO Labs the Powershot G9!

Lets find out if we can se the dynamic range differences in a real image!
Canon G10 dynamic range

The square that the comparing crops
are taken from contains bright white
to black.

Lets compare them just for fun :0)
As shot
Images above, as they came out from the cameras in JPG fine and Large setting.
No need to resample the G9 image to match the G10 crop size as both cameras was shoot at there widest angle zoom setting at ISO 80.
Any difference in dynamics spotted?

Exposure +3
No I cant spot the difference either, so I decided to edit the image in PS to crank up
the exposure +3 steps to find out if there is any thing to explore in the dark areas (Image does not look nice this way) does anyone se anything?

Mins 3 in exposure settings
OK lets crank it the other way then and se if there is anything there to explore!
Let me know what you think.
I think there is no or insignificant (but still measurable by DXO labs) differences in between this to cameras so look elsewhere if you need an argument to get one over the other :0)
